Oh BoxHead…What can we say about this malevolent creature that has intrigued us from the very start? In the mind of a killer this creature was the perfect combination of tactfulness and brutality. Ruvick created this monster to kill anything in its paths whilst having the ability to regenerate if need be! The charter of the BoxHead is one that I will always remember, not because I hated trying to beat it, or the fact that it had to rip off its own head in order to regenerate…No no no. I remember this creature because of its humanity. You might be asking yourself, Arielle, where are you going with this, well hang tight and ill explain. The humanity that is shown within the creature BoxHead isn’t reveled until the DLC of the evil within, The Executioner. In this DLC we learn of the true origins of the BoxHead. He is a butcher who is looking for his lost daughter within the world of STEM. Throughout the process of finding his daughter, he has to fight another version of himself and creatures along the way. In the end killing himself is the only true way to save his daughter since it is “the Hyde” of his personality that has captured her. In the end, his daughter is freed, but BoxHead dies saving her. Throughout the game you fight the very monsters that you are becoming. You are fighting your sanity, your hunger to kill and you are fighting away the fog seeping over your mind that will make you forget the things closest to your deteriorating soul. This DLC has allot packed into, there is allot of meaning and philosophical underpinnings that I was shocked by! The fact that mikami created a character so empathetic, yet monstrous shows us that anything can be created to emit weakness but at the same time be created to slam your skull into a wall, rip its own head off and not bat an eye, or give two thoughts of it. No one really gives the BoxHead credit, but this character is a masterpiece. In a way, BoxHead reminded me allot of Pyramid Head from Silent Hill. A character so menacing and truly evil, yet a protector a creature that was willing to hurt itself in order to the human form of Alessa. He exemplifies the same humanity that the BoxHead shows and is quite the specimen if you think about it. Looking at both creatures I would guess that Mikami drew inspiration from that character to create BoxHead. So, would I recommend buying/playing this game? Yes I would. I it heartfelt and continues the story from the previous two DLC’s The Assignment and The Consequence wonderfully!!! Through the gore, the mystery, the blood baths we see a human side to the BoxHead. Beloved father and executioner.
