A picture can host a multitude of things. A time of year, a state of mind, a certain feeling, or even a certain emotion. Being trapped forever in hues of blues, reds, and greens that make up a piece of art that will resonate with those watching. But what if the painting could watch back? What if the art that you so loved turned on you with feverish hate that only you could quell. Layers of fears, a very trippy psychedelic psychological horror game will have you second-guessing yourself, and viewing the world at different angles. No really, there’s a part in the game where you are viewing everything upside down. In this game your choices, much like in life are final, you can't go back and experiment with different choices, or see other options (which I find kind of cool). The uniqueness of this game is what I like, I like that this is a horror game based on unique scares, not jump scares that you can see coming a mile away. This game is different from anything that I have ever played in the sense that it relies on the player's choices. With each part that is completed, another piece of the painting is closer to being completed. the main character you play is unnamed but is trying to complete his magnum opus, his masterpiece, his reason for being. You as the player will solve different puzzles and rely on clues given throughout the environment you are in to finish your painting. But this game goes much deeper than just “finishing a painting” this game reminded me of the story of Dorian Grey, a man who wanted perfection…the character In this game, much like Dorian Grey is a hedonist. Both characters show moral duplicity and self-indulgence. This character in layers of fear kills himself mentally just to stay beautiful, to keep living a highly thought of life amongst his peers. Dorian is the same where he would commit a murder, then go to a lavish party in the same evening. "Crime belongs exclusively to the lower orders. ... I should fancy that crime was to them what art is to us, simply a method of procuring extraordinary sensations" Dorian Grey 1891 throughout the game we hear whispers of the main characters past, a haunting and self-deprecating one to say the least. We learn that he has a daughter, who gets her own DLC that is in direct correlation to the game. With all the “psychedelic trips” that are in with this game you would think that the ending would be any less weird, not a chance. The ending of this game, much like Dorian Grey was a bittersweet close to an unfinished thought. The main theme throughout this game, which is also in Dorian Grey is the concept of aestheticism where the main character of Layers Of Fear is trapped in a world of parties and the high life but has a dark tumor lurking in his soul, much like Dorian. So, did I enjoy this game and would I recommend it to you? Yes, I would! If you enjoy a slow-paced horror game with jump scares that go along with the atmosphere then this is for you! #gaming #layersoffear #horror
