A Hunter of the 80’s: Nostalgia, a rough draft with promise and music that creates a world coated in childhood memories for some and for others and endearing curiosity. Castlevania is a platformer game published in 1986, reworked and rereleased for the modern-day collector junkie. Buying this and experiencing this game for the first time made me feel nostalgia I never knew I had. This game sunk its teeth into my 2022 and showed a lot of us that gaming origins never died with the times. A First Impression: Going into this game I found myself flopping between really enjoying myself and being bored out of my mind. Yes, I understand that this is where the term Metroidvania comes from, but this to me screams (to an extent) its nostalgia so that’s why this game is good. A lot of people understand that this collection of 8- and 16-bit games are a part of history, and that’s why they are classics, they truly paved the way for where we are now, so in that sense, yes, this game is incredible. It's like taking a time machine back to the 80's, amazing hair, great music, and ideas that were revolutionary. This game so far is good and created that early atmosphere of Scooby doo spooks and NES confusion. The controls right off the bat were awful, even though they were customizable; they were clunky and didn’t flow well with the switch and its layout at all I feel like one would need to play this on its original hardware for it to have a better feel to it. While this game reverts back to a simpler time and being that I am only now just playing this game, I feel as if it's so far very bland and its reputation and what the game did in a historical sense is what aged well, not the game itself. Because if we look at this logically, now that we are in some of the most advanced times for gaming, we can see that Castlevania has no story in the first installment, you’re basically just finding Dracula. That’s the crux of it from what I’ve gathered. Your only weapon is a whip, and the only way to heal is getting meat form the walls…Tasty. Siring a Lasting Legacy: At the end of the day this game is a classic, why, because it is the steppingstone for games like Ori and The Blind Forest, Ender lilies, and many more! I can’t wait to continue this game and the franchise to see how the game and its world progresses. Making these games available for a person in this era is fundamentally important in understanding gaming history and where a lot of the titles we love, came from. Castlevania sired a new legacy into existence, one that will impact generations to come.
