A Nightmares Dream: Waking up in an unforgiving world that emotionally taunts you into becoming a rabid version of you. The beast will fool you, then make you one of them. You must make the choice, do you enter into this nightmare as the hunter or the hunted?
The Waking World: “I’m waking up, I’ll forget everything…” Micolash, Host of the nightmare It was all a dream, or quite possibly a lucid dream, a dream that you experience and control basis of. The fight with Micolash and several other bosses in this game deserves its own section or DLC. Lets look at Micolash first because I feel he is one of the most influential characters in this game. the way his movements are and this whole segment it is in fact the most dream like boss battle/sequence in this whole game. Running through foggy areas trying to capture something or someone just out of your reach. This boss battle in the nightmare of Mensis reenacted how it feels and visually looks like to be in a lucid dream, you're able to control everything, and yet some things just out of your reach. Foggy, cold in a distant part of the mind that never really becomes visible.
In bloodborne everything at times feels just out of reach to the point of where when you try for something and you think, “was that my mind or was it truly not reachable?” the concept déjà vu reaches new heights and bloodborne turns into memories that become corroded, and disfigured.
Amygdala: The Amygdala is the processing center for anxiety, aggression etc and the use of it as a boss battle makes me think that we are literally fighting against our own brain. This is possibly signifying that the main character may need to use their brain a little more, and that the dream is only a temporary thing. “The amygdala is an almond-shaped mass of nuclei (mass of cells) located deep within the temporal lobes of the brain. There are two amygdalae, one situated in each brain hemisphere. The amygdala is a limbic system structure that is involved in many of our emotions and motivations, particularly those that are related to survival.” this explains a lot in the game when we think about it. We rely on our survival skills the most in Bloodborne, leveling up learning how to parry, defending ourselves, back stepping even the choosing of our ending. It’s all a learning and survival process in this chaotic world. Seeing in the game that several Amygdala's are dead leans more towards the notions that the person has actually died, they gave up the fight and didn’t control their brain very well when they turned into a scourged beast. Also seeing amygdales covering the game means that this is all in your head, and that the concept and your surroundings are that of the brain, nothing else.
The Truth:
Unveiling the world for what it is, Rom the vacuous spider lifts the veil and makes the world come to life in more ways than one. This lifting of the veil symbolize a new era, or a renaissance if you will. Doing what she did made everything more of a unity. Showing you the things around you for what they truly are and bringing to life what is more a corrupt nature of Bloodbornes universe. Truth, in the form of insight will take over the player as Rom puts all the secrets on display that will cost our characters life and the Healing Churches reputation.
Déjà vu:
A hunters job is to us safe, with being said the way this hunter deals with trauma and staying safe themselves is forgetting and compartmentalizing each trip from the real world by escaping to the Hunter Dream. The Hunters Dream is a safe haven for the hunters brain to rest and forget the woes of mankind. Going into the waking world of man retraumatizes our dear hunter by showing them monsters and having them re-kill what was already seemingly dead. Let’s hope that we equip our formless Odeon because that inner voice is a kindness that will guide us…hopefully.
Your Worth: Hiding in the hunters dream is the nightmare that plagues us all. Our own choice. The choice of the life lies in the struggles that you face. The waste of skin, the solider, there are many headstone that our fate lies upon, choosing that fate is takes finessing, and a lot of character upgrades. The echoes of humanity ring true in every souls games. Bloodborne is a masterpiece that carries the message that your life is yours through every struggle, choice and little death. Don’t let someone else have the control. this game is a beautiful work of art that creates some of the most meaningful themes I have ever seen in a game. From the controls, to the cut scenes, to the lore. Bloodborne will test you and excite you in ways that you mind will say “wait…don’t go…just stay a bit longer.” Through it all I would recommend this game to anyone who loves a good challenge and to any fan of the souls franchise. May you find your worth in the waking world, dear hunter.
