Just like old times, only better! Resident evil seven Review

Updated: Apr 22, 2021

Twenty years of surviving death to come to a place where we have to survive it all yet again. This time with a twist, a new home, and new faces that will greet us with a warm smile that invites us to our death. This is nothing new, no…This is something much more. Welcome back home.

Resident Evil Seven is the very long-awaited game from the Resident Evil series. As we all know Resident Evil Six was an astronomical flop in the gaming community that we all thought Mikami would not be able to recover from. Low and behold, Resident Evil Seven exceeded EVERYONE's expectations. I will admit, when I first got the game I was slightly trepidatious but very excited. My first reaction when going into the game was that the graphics are stunning to the point of looking almost real! Getting further into it I realize that it is the first person, and I think to myself “oh no, this can't be good.” I am so accustomed to seeing Resident Evil played from a third-person point of view that this caught me off guard. The realism and creepy atmosphere made the game start off very eerie and kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time. What was brought back into the game was the element of surprise that everyone loved in the first Resident Evil game, the endless possibility of what could be waiting around every corner.

Now, let’s dive into more of the plotline of the story, I will get into the mechanics in a bit. In the universe of Resident Evil Seven, a new plotline is formed to a degree. We have some of the older characters come back, but with a new twist on an already immersive plotline. You play as the main protagonist Ethan Winters who, after three years of searching finds a lead that brings him to the baker family estate in search of his wife, Mia. The family welcomes him with a warm smile and a dark past that Ethan uncovers whilst in the mansion he begins to fear. Now what I found interesting was that Mikami had no part in the Resident Evil Seven. I found this shocking when I learned about this because it has everything that I would have expected of a “modern-day” Resident evil. It has the horror, it has the cohesive plotline, it has the creepy creatures, and it was brought back to what we love about Resident Evil. Now I will go on a bit of a tangent with this next thought, the character Evalyn. I like her, but I would have thought it to be more structured if she was a by-product so to speak of the T-Virus. I don’t actually know what her role is, in my opinion, I was confused by her character and unsure if she was just a filler to make the game flow better. I understand that she is the grandmother in the game, but if that is the only “AH-HA moment” then why have her in the game? I know I need to play Zoë’s part of the story most likely to understand the character Evalyn more, but im still slightly confused by Evelyn. Intrigued yet confused.

Now let’s get into the controls of the game, being that it is the first person I was so very skeptical about it. Will the aim be good, will the shots be accurate, will it have awkward camera work, etc.. etc.. the controls, to my surprise was actually very smooth and well organized. The shooting mechanism was very steady, as well as the items list in conjunction with finding/combining items, it made the whole process easier. I hope it is the same for Resident Evil Two Remake. The control reaction time as well we very very good, it had the controls of a good shooter game, but keep the movements steady, and well-paced. I wasn’t experiencing any glitches or anything bad in terms of controls. The only thing I would say is that the load screen TAKES FOREVER.

Now the moment you’ve all been waiting for, was Chris’s part genuine in the game? Meaning did we think that he was needed in this game. It was definitely a shock for me, I fangirled im not going to lie, I screamed, I cried I was so happy that he was put in this game. The fact that he works for Blue Umbrella makes me think that that there is going to be an eighth game. We already know what happens in Chris’s DLC “Not A Hero.” But I believe that this was a good move on the dev’s part to bring back an old character, that way it is still linked with resident evil and is not just an entirely new game.

So did I like Resident Evil Seven? I loved it. It brought me back to what I love about this franchise. It brought me back to the genuine horror, anticipation, puzzles, great voice acting, and killer music! So yes, buy the game, cherish it and let me know what you think down in the comments! #residentevilseven #residentevil
